When I tell people that I am a certified functional nutrition counselor and a certified holistic cancer coach, they often start asking a lot of questions about both.  They want to better understand how my work can help them improve their health or the health of someone they know.

So, in this article, I thought I would answer some of the most common questions I am asked regarding my work as a holistic cancer coach.  A holistic cancer coach can play an important role in helping a cancer patient beat the odds and get better, but very few people even know such a human exists.

Question: What is holistic cancer coaching

Answer:  Holistic cancer coaching is a type of coaching that focuses on helping people with cancer manage their physical, emotional, psychological and spiritual health.

Question:  What role does a holistic cancer coach play in the cancer experience?

Answer: While we all know that the medical team plays a vital role in providing treatment and managing the disease, there is growing recognition of the need for a holistic, whole-body approach to cancer care. This approach acknowledges the interconnectedness of the mind, body, and spirit and emphasizes the importance of addressing all aspects of a person’s well-being during their cancer journey.

This is where a holistic cancer coach steps in.

A holistic cancer coach is a trained professional who brings a unique set of skills and knowledge to the cancer support team. They understand that the journey to healing involves more than just medical interventions. Their focus extends beyond the tumor and encompasses the whole person, including their emotional, psychological and spiritual well-being.

For example: A cancer diagnosis can bring about a wide range of emotional and psychological challenges.  Feelings of fear, anxiety, sadness and uncertainty are common  responses to the diagnosis and the subsequent treatment process.

It can all become overwhelming very quickly; a patient can start to feel like they are drowning in a sea of fear and chaos.

A holistic cancer coach understands that cancer affects every aspect of a person’s life and that addressing the person as a whole is essential for optimal healing and well-being, in addition to reducing the fear, chaos and feeling of being overwhelmed.

Question:  Does diet really matter?

Answer:  Yes. Nutrition plays a vital role in supporting the health and well-being of individuals affected by cancer. A well-balanced diet can help optimize the body’s immune function, support energy levels, manage side effects and promote overall wellness. Holistic cancer coaches, like myself, help the individual develop nutrition plans that incorporate nutrient-rich foods, antioxidants, and anti-inflammatory ingredients to support the body’s healing.

Question:  Do lifestyle modifications really help in a cancer battle?

Answer:  Yes. Lifestyle modifications, such as regular physical activity, adequate sleep and stress management techniques, are integral to the holistic approach. These practices can help boost energy levels, improve sleep quality, reduce side effects and enhance overall well-being.  Complementary therapies, such as acupuncture, massage, reiki, colon hydrotherapy and mind-body practices, are often used to complement and support well-being. These therapies can help manage side effects, alleviate discomfort, reduce anxiety and stress and promote relaxation.  Holistic cancer coaches guide individuals in exploring and incorporating these complementary approaches as part of their comprehensive well-being plan.

Question:  What about treatment side effects? Can a cancer coach give guidance there?

Answer:  Yes. A cancer coach brings a wealth of knowledge and holistic perspective to this process, working closely with patients to alleviate symptoms by focusing on nutrition, exercise and other supportive strategies.

Question:  Do you work with clients who have finished treatments and want to improve their odds of preventing a recurrence?

Answer:  Yes.  As my mother always said, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. A holistic cancer coach can play a vital role in post-medical care by focusing on improving a patient’s odds of preventing a cancer recurrence through optimizing diet and lifestyle habits.

In conclusion

My wife often hears me saying, “knowledge is power; what you don’t know can hurt you.” It is essential to understand the value of incorporating holistic approaches in cancer care and the significant role of a cancer coach in providing comprehensive support and education.

A holistic cancer coach can help patients navigate their cancer journey with more confidence and empowerment.

If you know someone battling cancer, send them this article.  It may be exactly the boost they need.
